The body is designed to heal itself and many illnesses can be avoided by providing the body with what it needs in the foods that we eat. Foods from the ground work with our bodies to support our natural immune system so that we can resist diseases and cancers. This is not to say that illness will never be part of our life, but if the body is given the proper nutrients through natural food, we can help and not hinder our immune system.
Things that should be the staples in our diet are all manner vegetables, fruits and berries, beans, lentils, whole grain rices, whole ancient (original unmodified) grains, nuts, and a limited amount of meats or eggs.
We should only consume foods that are not modified, processed, injected with hormones, or sprayed with chemicals such as pesticides or preservatives. This means spending a little extra money on your food to avoid health care costs that come along with the standard American diet. Shopping at organic markets and local farmers markets give you vegetables and fruits that are higher in vitamins and minerals grown in soils that have not been stripped by industrial farming methods. Growing your own organic garden is cost effective and working with soil provides stress relief and sense of accomplishment.
Add lots of cruciferous vegetables into your diet. Steamed, stir fried, roasted, or in salads, these are the key vegetables with healing properties. These include Arugula, Bok Choy, Broccoli, Brussels Sprouts, Cabbage, Cauliflower, Collard Greens, Kale, Radishes, Rutabaga, Turnips, Wasabi, Horseradish as well as all green leafy vegetables. Add healthy fats into your diet such as raw olive oil, coconut oil, avocado, nuts and seeds.
Eliminate unhealthy fats such as hydrogenated oils, margarins, processed vegetable oil, canola oil. Limit or eliminate refined sugars, refined grains and sugary drinks. Instead of resorting to artificial sweetners use honey, real maple syrup and molasses. You can retrain your taste buds and lose your cravings for sugary, processed foods in about two weeks. Eat food that is as nature produces it and as God intended!
